This is an original print from the photo lithograph process of the 1870s. It was printed by A.D. Willis of Wanganui. John was engineer of the Manawatu County and undertook work for the Palmerston North Borough Council on a contract basis in 1877 and 1878. On 21 September 1877 the Borough Council engaged him to supply a map of the borough, at a cost of 37 pounds (see Manawatu Times newspaper, 26 September 1877, page 2). However, the map does not appear to have been completed until 1878, for the plan contains the words "Population 1870-10 Ditto 1878-2000" It appear that Mr Barton was not a very good speller. Note the mispelling of Ferguson St, Rangitikei St and the cemetery. He has alsl misplaced Boundary Road. Ian Matheson (Archivist) 22 December 1995.
